Background of the Study
Urbanization has significantly influenced language dynamics across Nigeria, with urban dialects emerging as potent forces in shaping lexical semantics. In Sokoto, the youth are increasingly adopting urban Hausa dialects that blend traditional vocabulary with contemporary slang and foreign influences. This evolution reflects socio-cultural changes driven by globalization, technological advancements, and interregional interactions. As urban youth navigate diverse linguistic environments, lexical choices are often reinterpreted to align with modern identities. The shift in lexical semantics challenges conventional definitions and introduces innovative expressions that may not conform to standard language norms (Abubakar, 2023). Furthermore, the interplay between formal Hausa and its urban variant raises questions regarding language preservation and transformation. Recent research suggests that these emerging urban dialects contribute to a dynamic lexical repository that both enriches and complicates traditional semantics (Muhammad, 2024). The fluidity of urban language use impacts educational practices, media communications, and everyday interactions, thereby influencing cultural continuity and language policy. This study examines the extent to which urban dialects affect lexical semantics among Hausa-speaking youth in Sokoto, exploring the tension between tradition and modernity in language usage.
Statement of the Problem
The rapid urbanization of Sokoto has given rise to a distinctive urban Hausa dialect that significantly diverges from traditional lexical semantics. This divergence has resulted in lexical innovations that, while reflecting modern influences, may lead to inconsistencies in language understanding. Educators and language policy makers have expressed concerns about the potential erosion of standard Hausa vocabulary, which could hinder effective communication in formal settings (Abubakar, 2023). Additionally, the lack of consensus on new lexical items creates challenges in language instruction and media representation, potentially marginalizing traditional forms. This study, therefore, seeks to investigate the extent to which urban dialects reshape lexical semantics among Sokoto’s youth, identifying both the innovative contributions and the challenges posed by these linguistic transformations (Muhammad, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the influence of urban dialects on lexical semantics in Hausa among youth.
To evaluate the impact of modern lexical innovations on traditional language structures.
To recommend strategies for integrating urban lexical trends with standard Hausa language norms.
Research Questions
How do urban dialects influence lexical semantics among Hausa-speaking youth?
What are the key lexical changes observed in the urban variant of Hausa?
How can educational and media policies address the challenges of lexical innovation?
Significance of the Study
This study is crucial for understanding the interplay between urban dialects and traditional lexical semantics among Hausa youth. By identifying the linguistic shifts and their implications, the research offers insights that could inform language policy and educational curricula. The findings aim to bridge the gap between modern linguistic practices and traditional norms, ensuring that language evolution is harnessed to enhance communication rather than hinder it. The study benefits educators, policymakers, and cultural preservationists by providing actionable recommendations for maintaining language continuity (Abubakar, 2023; Muhammad, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses exclusively on the impact of urban dialects on lexical semantics in Hausa among youth in Sokoto. It is limited to examining lexical changes and does not extend to broader sociolinguistic phenomena.
